Makira Owl

The Makira owl, scientifically known as Athene roseoaxillaris, is a small, elusive owl endemic to the island of Makira in the Solomon Islands. It was first formally described by Ernst Mayr in 1935, emerging from his extensive surveys of the avifauna of the Pacific islands. Its taxonomy has remained a subject of ongoing discussion among ornithologists, as it was historically considered a subspecies of the more widespread Ninox jacquinoti before more recent molecular studies highlighted its distinct characteristics.

The physical design of this species is marked by evolutionary adaptations suited to its dense, forested habitat. Its rounded wings and tail provide the necessary maneuverability to navigate thick vegetation during flight, a common feature in island-dwelling raptors that rely on agility rather than long-distance soaring.
