Simeulue Scops-Owl

The Simeulue Scops-Owl, Otus umbra, is an island-endemic species restricted to Simeulue, an island off the western coast of Sumatra, Indonesia. It was scientifically described in the early 20th century, emerging from an era of intensive ornithological exploration in the Malay Archipelago. As a member of the Strigidae family, its evolutionary path was shaped by prolonged geographic isolation, which fostered distinct morphological adaptations suitable for the dense tropical forests of its narrow island habitat.

The species is characterized by its rounded wing and tail shapes, traits that are typical of forest-dwelling owls that require maneuverability over speed in confined woodland environments.
