Mao

The Mao, or Mao-mao (Gymnomyza samoensis), is a member of the honeyeater family endemic to the islands of Savai'i and Upolu in Samoa. This avian species occupies a significant place in Samoan cultural heritage, traditionally revered for its distinctive, resonant call that echoes through the upland forests. Its evolutionary history has resulted in unique physical adaptations, including the rounded wings and rounded tail shape that assist its maneuverability within the dense, humid rainforest canopy.

First formally described by the ornithologist Orthur Hay in the late 19th century, the Mao remains a subject of intense conservation interest due to its status as an endangered species. Ornithologists and researchers note that the bird's design—a dark, sleek plumage coupled with specialized beak morphology—is a result of long-term isolation in the Pacific archipelago.
