Macgregor's Honeyeater

Macgregor's honeyeater, or Macgregoria pulchra, is a distinct species of bird found in the high-altitude forests of New Guinea. It was first described in the late 19th century and named after Sir William MacGregor, a British colonial administrator and explorer who served as the first Lieutenant-Governor of British New Guinea. Its classification has historically been a subject of ornithological interest due to its unique physical characteristics.

The bird is characterized by its broad wings and rounded tail, features that contribute to its specific flight patterns within the montane canopy. While historically grouped with honeyeaters, recent taxonomic research has suggested it may be more closely related to birds of paradise. Its plumage is notably dark, accented by prominent, bright yellow eye wattles, a design feature that serves as a key identifying trait among the dense alpine vegetation it inhabits.
