Where it came from

Markham's Storm-Petrel was scientifically described by Osbert Salvin in 1883, named in honor of the British explorer and geographer Sir Clements Markham. This species belongs to the Hydrobatidae family, a group of small seabirds characterized by their highly pelagic lifestyle, spending the vast majority of their lives at sea and coming to land only to breed in remote, often inaccessible coastal regions.

The bird is distinguished by its dark, soot-colored plumage, pointed wings, and a distinctly forked tail, which aids in its erratic, butterfly-like flight pattern over the Pacific Ocean. Its design reflects an evolutionary adaptation to the nutrient-rich currents of the Humboldt Current, allowing it to remain airborne for extended periods while foraging for small fish and crustaceans near the surface.
