Marquesan Ground Dove

The Marquesan Ground Dove, or Pampusana rubescens, is a rare species endemic to a few islands in the Marquesas archipelago of French Polynesia. It represents a specialized branch of the Columbidae family, evolving in isolation to survive in the rugged, forested terrain of the Pacific. These birds are characterized by their distinctively rounded wings and tails, physical adaptations that facilitate short, sudden bursts of flight beneath dense island canopies rather than sustained travel.
