Masked Cardinal

The Masked Cardinal, or Paroaria nigrogenis, is a passerine bird native to the northern regions of South America, primarily inhabiting mangroves and swampy scrublands in Venezuela and Trinidad. Unlike the more common Red-capped Cardinal, this species is distinguished by its jet-black face and throat patch, which contrast sharply against a vibrant red crest and breast. It has long been a subject of interest for 19th and 20th-century ornithological illustrators who favored the striking chromatic composition of the bird's plumage when documenting the biodiversity of the Orinoco delta.
