Mauritius Fody

The Mauritius fody, Foudia rubra, is an endemic passerine bird restricted to the island of Mauritius and its offshore islets. Historically widespread across the main island, the species suffered a drastic population decline due to the introduction of invasive predators and the clearing of native forests for agriculture. By the 1970s, the population was confined to a small area of the Black River Gorges, necessitating intensive conservation interventions to prevent extinction.

The species is distinguished by its vivid plumage, with males displaying a bright red head and breast during the breeding season, transitioning to an olive-brown coloration outside of that period. Ornithologically, it is recognized by its rounded wing shape and notched tail, features that have been documented extensively by researchers studying the evolutionary biology of the Foudia genus. Conservation efforts, led by groups like the Mauritian Wildlife Foundation, have focused on translocating individuals to predator-free islets, a strategy that has successfully stabilized their numbers.
