Mayotte White-eye

The Mayotte White-eye, Zosterops mayottensis, is a passerine bird endemic to the Comoros archipelago in the Indian Ocean. It evolved within the isolated ecosystems of these volcanic islands, where the relative lack of competition allowed it to occupy diverse niches across the islands of Mayotte and Mohéli. Its distinct rounded wings and tail are evolutionary adaptations suited to the dense vegetation and shorter-distance flight patterns typical of small-island forest environments.

First described in the late 19th century, the species serves as a representative example of the Zosteropidae family's remarkable ability to colonize and adapt to isolated oceanic environments. It was not designed by humans, but rather shaped by natural selection over millennia. Ornithological study of the species often highlights its bright plumage and characteristic white eye-ring, which are common traits across the genus and serve as key features for identification within the Comoros region.
