Merida Tapaculo

The Merida Tapaculo (Scytalopus meridanus) is a passerine bird belonging to the Rhinocryptidae family, identified as an endemic species native to the high-altitude forests of the Andes in Venezuela. It was historically considered a subspecies of the Spillmann's Tapaculo, but ornithological studies eventually elevated it to a full species status based on distinct vocalizations and geographical isolation within the Merida Andes. Its name reflects its restricted range in the cloud forests around the city of Merida.

The species is characterized by its small, cryptic physical form, featuring rounded wings and a square tail, which are adaptations for navigating the dense, tangled undergrowth of the Andean shrub layer. Like other members of the genus Scytalopus, the design of the Merida Tapaculo prioritizes stealth and agility over flight efficiency. It is famously difficult for field researchers to observe, as it rarely leaves the cover of the forest floor, a behavior that has made its documentation a point of interest for conservationists studying biodiversity in fragile mountain ecosystems.
