Mexican Jay

The Mexican jay, scientifically classified as Aphelocoma wollweberi, is a species native to the oak and pine-oak woodlands of the Sierra Madre mountain ranges in Mexico and the extreme southwestern United States. Unlike many migratory birds, these jays are highly sedentary and social, living in small, complex family groups that exhibit cooperative breeding behaviors. They were identified as a distinct species through the systematic biological surveys of the 19th century, which sought to categorize the diverse avian life inhabiting the elevated corridors of North America.

The physical characteristics of the species, notably its rounded wings and distinctively notched tail, are evolutionary adaptations suited to its specific habitat of navigating dense shrubbery and forest canopies.
