Mouse-colored Antshrike

The Mouse-colored Antshrike, Thamnophilus murinus, is a species of bird in the family Thamnophilidae, native to the Amazon basin. It was first described by the English zoologist Philip Sclater in 1855, emerging from an era of intensive European exploration and cataloging of South American avian biodiversity. These birds typically inhabit the canopy and sub-canopy of humid lowland forests, having evolved their distinctive coloration as a form of crypsis within the shaded, complex light of the rainforest.

The physical characteristics of the species, including its rounded wings and notched tail, are functional adaptations to its life in dense foliage. Its taxonomic classification reflects the meticulous morphological studies conducted by nineteenth-century naturalists who prioritized visible structural differences—such as plumage tone and tail geometry—to differentiate the vast array of antshrikes found throughout the Neotropics.
