Nanday Parakeet

The Nanday Parakeet, scientifically classified as Aratinga nenday, is a species native to the Pantanal region of South America, encompassing parts of Brazil, Bolivia, Paraguay, and Argentina. Its history as a collection item is rooted in the 20th-century pet trade, where its intelligence and social nature made it a common fixture in aviaries. These birds are distinct for their broad wing shape and pointed tails, features that allow for agile flight through their native woodlands and open savannahs.

While not designed in an industrial sense, the species has been studied extensively by ornithologists since its formal classification. The bird is characterized by a prominent black mask and bill, which provides its common alternative name, the Black-hooded Parakeet. Outside of its natural habitat, the species has proven remarkably resilient, establishing successful feral populations in diverse urban environments such as Los Angeles and St. Petersburg, where their distinctive vocalizations and communal roosting habits have made them a familiar, if sometimes controversial, presence.
