Thick-billed Parrot

The thick-billed parrot is a high-altitude specialist native to the old-growth coniferous forests of the Sierra Madre Occidental in Mexico. Historically, their range extended into the mountains of Arizona and New Mexico, making them the only parrot species native to the United States in modern times. Their design is a remarkable evolutionary adaptation to a specialized diet of pine seeds, characterized by a robust, heavy beak capable of cracking tough cones and a strong, broad-winged build that allows for efficient travel across rugged, high-elevation terrain.
