Nilgiri Pipit

The Nilgiri pipit, scientifically classified as Anthus nilghiriensis, is a bird endemic to the high-altitude grasslands of the Western Ghats in southern India. It was first described by the British ornithologist Richard Bowdler Sharpe in 1885, reflecting a period of intense European scientific interest in documenting the unique biodiversity of the Indian subcontinent during the colonial era. The species is characterized by its specific adaptation to the 'shola' grassland mosaic, an environment that has become increasingly fragmented due to land-use changes.
