Sprague's Pipit

Sprague's Pipit, scientifically classified as Anthus spragueii, was formally described by John James Audubon in 1844. Named in honor of the naturalist Isaac Sprague, who accompanied Audubon on his 1843 expedition up the Missouri River, the bird was identified as a distinct species within the pipit family. Its evolution has resulted in highly specialized physical traits, including its narrow wings and pointed tail, which are adaptations designed for its unique aerial display and life within the vast, open grasslands of the North American Great Plains.

The species is historically associated with the untouched native prairie ecosystem, a habitat that has seen significant decline since the mid-19th century. Ornithologists and conservationists have long studied the bird for its elusive behavior and complex, descending song, which is performed while the bird remains high in the sky.
