North Island Kokako

The North Island kokako, or Callaeas wilsoni, is a forest-dwelling bird endemic to the North Island of New Zealand. Historically widespread across the island's podocarp-hardwood forests, the species is defined by its unique morphology, including distinctive rounded wings and a long, rounded tail that assist in its characteristic habit of bounding and gliding between branches rather than engaging in sustained flight. As a member of the ancient wattlebird family, the kokako represents a significant evolutionary lineage separated from other songbirds for millions of years.

The bird holds a deep cultural significance as a taonga, or treasure, to the Māori people, often featuring in traditional folklore as the clever companion of the demigod Māui. By the late 20th century, the population faced severe decline due to habitat loss and the introduction of mammalian predators. Conservation efforts led by various New Zealand environmental organizations have focused on intensive predator control and managed translocation, resulting in a gradual recovery of the species from the brink of extinction. Today, the kokako is regarded as a primary indicator of forest health and a symbol of successful conservation biology.
