North Island Saddleback

The North Island saddleback, or tieke, is a bird endemic to the North Island of New Zealand, belonging to the wattlebird family. Traditionally recognized by Maori as a bird of significant cultural importance, it evolved in isolation, resulting in a species that is notoriously poor at flying. Its distinctive plumage, featuring a chestnut saddle across its back against a glossy black body, serves as the basis for its common name and is a result of evolutionary adaptation to dense forest understories.

During the colonial era, the introduction of mammalian predators nearly caused the total extinction of the species by the early 20th century. Conservation efforts eventually focused on translocating the birds to predator-free offshore islands, a practice that saved the species from collapse. The design of the bird—its rounded wings and tail—reflects a physiology adapted for short, burst flights within shrubbery, a trait that unfortunately left it vulnerable to ground-based predators but provides it with high maneuverability in its native habitat.
