Nuku Hiva Imperial-Pigeon

The Nuku Hiva imperial-pigeon, or Ducula galeata, is a rare, large arboreal pigeon endemic to the island of Nuku Hiva in the Marquesas Islands. Historically, the species was once widespread across the archipelago, but its range significantly contracted due to a combination of habitat loss, the introduction of invasive predators, and hunting. By the late 20th century, the pigeon was confined to a very small area in the Toovii plateau, leading to intensive conservation efforts to protect the remaining population.

The pigeon is distinguished by its size and its specific plumage characteristics, which reflect its evolutionary adaptation to the dense forest canopy of the Marquesas. Ornithologically, it is noted for its rounded wings and rounded tail, which provide the maneuverability required for navigating thick vegetation. Scientists and conservationists study these structural traits to better understand the avian biodiversity of the region and to implement strategies aimed at stabilizing the species against the risk of extinction.
