Ochre-breasted Tanager

The Ochre-breasted Tanager, Chlorothraupis stolzmanni, is a passerine bird native to the humid forests of the Chocó region, spanning parts of Colombia and Ecuador. It was formally described in 1877 by the Polish zoologist Władysław Taczanowski, who named the species in honor of Jan Sztolcman, a noted explorer and collector of South American avian specimens. As a member of the Cardinalidae family, its nomenclature and taxonomy have been adjusted over time, reflecting the ongoing scientific effort to categorize the complex relationships within the tanager-like groups of the Neotropics.

The species is physically characterized by its relatively drab, uniform olive-green plumage and a distinctive ochre-colored breast, which provides its common name. Its anatomical structure, notably the rounded wing and tail shapes, is an adaptation suited for the dense, shaded understory of montane forests where it moves through thick vegetation. While it lacks the vibrant coloration of more famous tanagers, its specialized morphology serves as a practical subject for ornithological studies regarding forest interior survival and niche evolution in the Andes.
