Orange-cheeked Waxbill

The Orange-cheeked Waxbill, or Estrilda melpoda, is a small estrildid finch native to western and central Africa. First described by the French zoologist Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon, in the 18th century, these birds inhabit the grassy savannas and forest edges of the region. They have long been appreciated by aviculturists for their gentle disposition and the distinct, bright orange patches on their cheeks that give them their common name.

In the context of aviculture, the species gained prominence during the mid-20th century as imports from West Africa became more common. Their design in nature—characterized by a rounded wing shape and a notched tail—allows for agile, undulating flight through dense grasses. While they are not considered domesticated, they remain a staple in the global bird-keeping community, valued for their social behavior and the subtle, harmonious interplay of their gray, brown, and vivid orange plumage.
