Pallas's Gull

Pallas's Gull, formally identified as Ichthyaetus ichthyaetus, was first described by the German naturalist Peter Simon Pallas in 1773. The species is part of the Laridae family and is notably distinct as the largest gull species within its genus. Its discovery occurred during Pallas's extensive scientific expeditions across the Russian Empire, where he cataloged numerous previously undocumented specimens to expand European understanding of Asian biodiversity.

The bird is characterized by its broad wings and distinctive pointed tail, features that assist in its long-distance migratory patterns across Central Asia and the Middle East. Ornithological research into the species focuses on its inland breeding colonies, often found near salt lakes and large steppe wetlands.
