Pallas's Cormorant, Urile perspicillatus, was a large flightless marine bird native to the Commander Islands in the Bering Sea. It was first documented by naturalist Georg Wilhelm Steller during Vitus Bering's second Kamchatka expedition in 1741. Steller described the bird as being remarkably abundant and providing a significant food source for the expedition's crew, noting its distinctive broad wings and pointed tail.
The species suffered from intense hunting pressure by fur traders and settlers following the discovery of the islands. Due to its flightless nature and limited geographical range, the population collapsed rapidly. The last confirmed sightings of the bird occurred in the mid-19th century, marking it as one of the few historical avian extinctions caused directly by human overexploitation. Today, the species is represented in scientific collections by a very small number of study skins preserved in museums globally.
