Palm-nut Vulture

The Palm-nut Vulture, known scientifically as Gypohierax angolensis, is a distinct bird of prey native to coastal regions and riverine forests across sub-Saharan Africa. Unlike most vultures which rely primarily on carrion, this species occupies a unique ecological niche by subsisting largely on the fruit of the oil palm and the raffia palm. Its evolutionary adaptation to a plant-based diet, supplemented by occasional mollusks or fish, distinguishes it from its scavenging relatives and is reflected in its specialized bill and foraging behaviors.

Physically, the species is characterized by a striking black-and-white plumage, a broad wing shape, and a rounded tail that facilitates maneuverability while navigating through dense canopy habitats. Ornithologists have long studied the bird as a fascinating case of convergent evolution, where a raptor has adopted a diet typically reserved for larger hornbills or monkeys. The species is widely recognized for its preference for proximity to water sources where its preferred palm food is abundant, maintaining a stable presence in tropical wetland ecosystems.
