Where it came from

The Peg-billed Finch is an endemic species native to the high-altitude cloud forests of Costa Rica. First described by ornithologist Robert Ridgway in 1882, the species was named in honor of Spencer Fullerton Baird, a prominent naturalist and the second Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution. The bird evolved as a specialized inhabitant of the Talamanca range, where its unique bill structure allows it to access resources in bromeliads and mossy substrates that other local finches cannot reach.

The bird’s design—specifically its namesake peg-like bill—is a remarkable example of ecological adaptation within the tanager family. Featuring broad wings and a rounded tail characteristic of its genus, the bird’s physical morphology is optimized for the dense, misty environment of the high-elevation canopy. It is considered a rare and elusive sighting even among experienced birders, often noted for its subtle, streaked plumage that provides camouflage against the bark and lichen of its natural habitat.
