First described by Emilie Snethlage in 1920, the species was long considered a subspecies of the White-eared Parakeet, Pyrrhura leucotis, until genetic and morphological research supported its status as a distinct species. The bird is characterized by its rounded wings and a distinctively long, pointed tail, adaptations well-suited to its life within the dry, deciduous forests of the Cerrado biome.
The species is named in honor of Dr. Pfrimer, a local physician who provided the initial specimens for study.
