Pink-breasted Lark

The Pink-breasted Lark, scientifically classified as Calendulauda poecilosterna, is a passerine bird native to the dry bushland and savanna regions of East Africa. Historically identified as part of the wider Mirafra genus, it was later reclassified into Calendulauda to better reflect its distinct behavioral and genetic traits, which set it apart from its lark cousins. Its specific physical adaptations, including the characteristic pointed wing shape and notched tail, are evolutionary responses to the arid environments of Kenya, Ethiopia, and Tanzania, allowing for the quick, agile flight patterns necessary for both predator evasion and foraging.

The bird was formally described and documented by ornithologists during the 19th century as part of the expanding scientific cataloging of African avian life.
