Pink-headed Duck

The Pink-headed Duck is one of the most enigmatic species in ornithological history, known for its distinctive plumage featuring a deep rose-colored head and neck contrasting against a dark, chocolate-brown body. Historically native to the wetlands and tall-grass jungles of the Ganges and Brahmaputra river plains in India, Nepal, and Bangladesh, the species was famously elusive. It was documented by naturalists in the 19th century, but its reliance on specialized, swampy habitats led to a population decline as these ecosystems were drained and converted for agriculture.

The species was formally described by John Latham in 1790, though its unique appearance has long captivated collectors and bird enthusiasts. It is characterized by its broad wings and rounded tail, a morphology suited for the dense, vegetated environments it frequented. Because the last confirmed sighting in the wild occurred in the mid-1920s, the species is widely considered extinct. Much of our current understanding of its design and biology is derived from preserved skins and illustrations archived in natural history museums, which serve as the primary records of its existence.
