Piura Chat-Tyrant

The Piura Chat-Tyrant, or Ochthoeca piurae, was formally described by the ornithologist John Todd Zimmer in 1937. As a member of the tyrant flycatcher family, its discovery emerged from the intensive biological surveys of the high-altitude Andean cloud forests in northwestern Peru. These surveys were part of a broader effort by the American Museum of Natural History to catalog the diverse and often isolated avian populations of the South American cordillera.

The species is distinguished by its specific adaptation to the undergrowth of montane forests, a habitat that dictates its broad-winged and notched-tail morphology, which allows for agile maneuverability in dense foliage. Its aesthetic is characterized by the muted, earthy tones typical of its genus, which provide essential camouflage in the misty, shadowed environments of the Piura region. It remains a subject of interest primarily to taxonomists and birdwatchers specialized in the Neotropical region due to its restricted range and the specific environmental conditions required for its survival.
