Plain-flanked Rail

The Plain-flanked Rail, known scientifically as Rallus wetmorei, is a rare species endemic to a narrow coastal range in northern Venezuela. It was first described by ornithologist Alexander Wetmore in 1941, following the discovery of specimens in the mangroves of Carabobo. The species occupies a highly specialized niche, relying on undisturbed salt marshes and mangrove fringes for survival, which has historically limited its geographic footprint and influenced its classification as a critically endangered species.

The bird's morphology is uniquely adapted to its dense, vegetative habitat, featuring a characteristically rounded wing shape that facilitates short, sudden bursts of flight through thick underbrush and a pointed tail that assists in navigating tight spaces. The design of the species reflects a deep evolutionary specialization for concealment. Because the bird is notoriously elusive and rarely observed in the wild, ornithological documentation remains sparse, reinforcing its status as one of the most enigmatic members of the Rallidae family.
