Pollen's Vanga

Pollen's Vanga, or Xenopirostris polleni, is an endemic bird species found exclusively in the humid forests of eastern Madagascar. Named after the Dutch naturalist François Pollen, who conducted significant biological explorations in Madagascar during the 19th century, this species represents a specialized branch of the Vangidae family. The bird is characterized by its broad wings and rounded tail, physical adaptations that suit its lifestyle of foraging for insects within the complex mid-level canopy of its native rainforest habitat.

The species is distinguished by its distinctive charcoal-grey plumage and a robust, hooked bill that highlights its evolutionary focus on specialized prey extraction. Within the ornithological community, the Vanga is often studied as a primary example of adaptive radiation, a process where a single ancestral species evolves into a variety of forms to occupy different ecological niches.
