Where it came from

The Poo-uli, or Melamprosops phaeosoma, was first discovered in 1973 by students conducting a biological survey in the Hanawi Natural Area Reserve on Maui. As a member of the Hawaiian honeycreeper family, it was highly distinct from its relatives, possessing a unique, bulky, thrush-like bill and specialized jaw muscles adapted for consuming land snails. Its discovery was a significant event in ornithology, marking the first time a new bird genus had been identified in the Hawaiian Islands since the 1920s.

The bird's decline was rapid and attributed to habitat degradation caused by invasive species, particularly feral pigs, and the spread of avian malaria carried by mosquitoes. Despite intensive recovery efforts, including captive breeding attempts by conservationists, the population plummeted to just three known individuals by the late 1990s. The species is now widely considered extinct, with the last confirmed sighting occurring in 2004, standing as a sobering case study in the vulnerability of island-endemic species.
