Puerto Rican Tanager

The Puerto Rican tanager, or Nesospingus speculiferus, is a bird species endemic to the island of Puerto Rico, primarily inhabiting the high-altitude forests of the Luquillo Mountains. Long classified within the tanager family, modern phylogenetic studies have revealed it to be a distinct evolutionary lineage, leading to its current classification in its own monotypic family, Nesospingidae. It has evolved specifically to navigate the dense, humid understory of the subtropical rainforests.

The bird is characterized by its dull olive-brown plumage and distinctively rounded wings and tail, which allow for efficient, agile maneuvering through thick vegetation rather than long-distance soaring. It was described scientifically in the 19th century, reflecting the era's growing interest in cataloging the unique biodiversity of the Caribbean. Because it remains restricted to a small geographical range, it has been a subject of ongoing study by ornithologists focused on island biogeography and conservation.
