Puna Snipe

The Puna snipe, Gallinago andina, is a wader species native to the high-altitude wetlands, or puna, of the central Andes. It was historically considered a subspecies of the South American snipe, but taxonomists have increasingly recognized it as a distinct species based on its unique habitat requirements and morphological adaptations. Its evolutionary history is tied to the harsh, boggy environments found at altitudes between 3,000 and 4,500 meters, where it has evolved to thrive in specialized marshlands and tussock grass environments.
