Puna Teal

The Puna Teal is a species of dabbling duck endemic to the high-altitude wetlands of the Andes, primarily found in the Altiplano region of Peru, Bolivia, Chile, and Argentina. Unlike many migratory waterfowl, this species evolved to thrive in the harsh, low-oxygen environments of high-altitude lakes and marshes, where its broad wings provide the necessary lift for maneuvering in thinner air. Its evolution is characterized by a distinctive plumage pattern, featuring a creamy face and neck that contrasts sharply with its dark, spotted body, an adaptation that likely serves as camouflage among the reeds and reflective glacial waters of its native habitat.
