Purple-bibbed Whitetip

The Purple-bibbed Whitetip, Urosticte benjamini, was formally described by the French naturalist Jules Bourcier in 1851. Named in honor of Benjamin de Rothschild, this hummingbird species inhabits the humid montane forests of the Andean foothills, primarily ranging through Colombia and Ecuador. Its discovery occurred during a period of intense European exploration into South American avian diversity, where collectors sought to document the varied, iridescent plumage characteristic of the Trochilidae family.

The species is distinguished by its pointed wing shape and notably forked tail, adaptations that facilitate its swift, maneuverable flight through dense forest understories. The male is particularly recognized for the deep violet patch on its throat, from which it derives its common name. Ornithologists have long noted the bird's specialized feeding behaviors, as its physical design is evolutionarily optimized for hovering while extracting nectar from specific, tubular-shaped flora found in its ecological niche.
