Purple Needletail

The Purple Needletail, scientifically identified as Hirundapus celebensis, is a swift species endemic to the island of Sulawesi and nearby regions in Indonesia. As a member of the Apodidae family, it has evolved a highly specialized aerial lifestyle, spending the majority of its life on the wing. It occupies a distinct niche within the ornithological record of the Malay Archipelago, where its presence was documented as part of the broader efforts by nineteenth and early twentieth-century naturalists to map the unique biodiversity of the Wallacea transition zone.

The species is distinguished by its sharp, aerodynamic wing shape, which facilitates high-velocity flight, and its signature tail structure featuring a slight fork and the characteristic stiff, protruding shafts—or 'needles'—that give the group its common name. Ornithologists characterize the Purple Needletail as a master of avian design, perfectly adapted for hunting insects in mid-air.
