The Purple-tailed Imperial-Pigeon, scientifically classified as Ducula rufigaster, is a member of the diverse Ducula genus of pigeons. It was formally described by the French naturalist Jean René Constant Quoy and Joseph Paul Gaimard in the 1830s, following their explorations of the South Pacific. Like other imperial pigeons, it evolved as a specialized frugivore within the dense rainforests of New Guinea and nearby islands, where its broad wings and rounded tail facilitate agile flight through thick, complex canopy layers.

This species is part of the broader group of pigeons characterized by their robust size and iridescent plumage.
