Rajah Scops-Owl

The Rajah Scops-Owl was formally described by the British zoologist Richard Bowdler Sharpe in 1892. Named in honor of the Brooke family, who served as the White Rajahs of Sarawak, the species is endemic to the montane forests of Borneo and Sumatra. It occupies a distinct ecological niche, favoring high-altitude primary forests that have historically been less disturbed than lowland habitats, which has contributed to our understanding of its specific biological requirements.

Physically, the species is characterized by its rounded wings and rounded tail, features that aid in its maneuverability within the dense, cluttered understory of its mountain environment. Taxonomists recognize two subspecies, Otus brookii brookii and Otus brookii solokensis, which are distinguished primarily by subtle variations in plumage coloration and geography. Because it is a shy, elusive nocturnal predator, the bird remained poorly studied for decades, appearing only rarely in the ornithological record.
