Rainbow Starfrontlet

The Rainbow Starfrontlet, Coeligena iris, is a species of hummingbird endemic to the cloud forests of the northern Andes, specifically within the borders of Ecuador and Peru. Like other members of the genus Coeligena, it was formally described by ornithologists during the 19th century as European naturalists began cataloging the immense biodiversity of South American high-altitude habitats. These birds are prized by researchers and naturalists for their iridescent plumage, which has evolved to reflect light in specific spectra to aid in courtship displays within the dim understory of their montane forest homes.

The physical characteristics of the Starfrontlet—notably its pointed wings and notched tail—are specialized evolutionary adaptations that allow for highly maneuverable, hovering flight patterns near high-altitude flowering plants. The species is characterized by a stark contrast between its dark body and brilliant, metallic-hued forehead patches.
