Red-billed Buffalo-Weaver

The Red-billed Buffalo-Weaver, Bubalornis niger, is a member of the Ploceidae family native to the dry savanna and bushveld regions of eastern and southern Africa. Unlike many weaver species that build solitary nests, this bird is known for its cooperative breeding behavior and the construction of large, untidy, communal stick nests shared by several pairs. These structures are often integrated into the branches of acacia trees, providing insulation and protection in the harsh, arid environments they inhabit.

The species is distinguished by its robust, bright red bill and the broad wing shape and notched tail that facilitate its distinct, heavy flight pattern. Ornithological documentation of the bird dates back to its classification by the naturalist Andrew Smith in the early 19th century. Its design is an evolutionary adaptation for a ground-foraging lifestyle, allowing the bird to thrive in semi-desert landscapes where it relies on a diet of seeds, fruit, and small insects.
