Red-headed Tanager

The Red-headed Tanager, Piranga erythrocephala, is a species endemic to the pine-oak forests of western and central Mexico. First described by the French naturalist René Lesson in 1828, the species emerged into the scientific consciousness during a period of intense European exploration of Mexican biodiversity. Its taxonomy reflects the typical structural evolution of the Thraupidae family, characterized by broad wings adapted for sustained flight through high-altitude woodland canopies and a rounded tail that aids in maneuverability among dense branches.
