Summer Tanager

The Summer Tanager, Piranga rubra, is a medium-sized songbird native to the southern United States and parts of Mexico. It evolved as a specialized insectivore, uniquely adapted to prey upon stinging hymenoptera such as bees and wasps. The species is characterized by its distinctively rounded wings and a subtly notched tail, features that aid in its maneuverability while hawking for insects in the mid-to-upper canopy of deciduous and mixed forests.

First formally described by Carl Linnaeus in 1758, the species has long been a subject of interest in ornithological illustration due to the male's vibrant, solid-red plumage. Naturalists of the 19th century, including John James Audubon, documented the bird extensively, capturing the essence of its behavior and morphology in foundational American wildlife art. The species remains a quintessential example of North American avian biodiversity, studied for its migratory patterns between its breeding grounds in North America and its wintering range in South and Central America.
