Red-tailed Newtonia

The Red-tailed Newtonia (Newtonia fanovanae) is a small passerine bird endemic to the humid evergreen forests of eastern Madagascar. First described in 1933, the species was long considered a localized specialty of the Fanovana region, remaining poorly understood for decades due to its elusive nature and restricted habitat. It is part of the Vanga family, a group of birds that exhibits remarkable adaptive radiation on the island, evolving to fill ecological niches occupied by entirely different avian families elsewhere in the world.

The species is characterized by its distinctively rounded wings and a notched tail, which facilitate agile movement through the dense understory of its forest home. It was officially classified as Vulnerable by the IUCN, as its population is fragmented by deforestation and habitat loss. Ornithological research into the bird focuses on its unique vocalizations and subtle plumage, which serve as the primary markers for field identification in an environment where the species is rarely observed.
