Ridgway's Hawk

Ridgway's hawk, scientifically known as Buteo ridgwayi, is a rare bird of prey endemic to the island of Hispaniola. It was first described by the American ornithologist Charles Wallace Richmond in 1895 and named in honor of his colleague Robert Ridgway, a prominent curator of birds at the Smithsonian Institution. The hawk occupies a specialized niche within the island's lowland forests, reflecting a long evolutionary history of adaptation to the Caribbean environment.

The species is characterized by its broad, rounded wings and a short, rounded tail, physical traits that enable it to maneuver effectively within dense forest canopies. Despite its historical range across Hispaniola, the bird has faced extreme population pressures due to habitat fragmentation and persecution, leading to its classification as critically endangered. Modern conservation efforts, including captive breeding and nest monitoring programs, are centered on protecting this singular avian link to the region's ecological heritage.
