Doria's Hawk

Doria's hawk, scientifically known as Megatriorchis doriae, was first described by the Italian ornithologist Tommaso Salvadori in 1874. The species was named in honor of the Italian naturalist Giacomo Doria, who was a prominent figure in zoological exploration during the late 19th century. As a bird endemic to the dense, primary rainforests of New Guinea, it has historically remained one of the most elusive and poorly understood raptors in the world, often documented by early European explorers through trade skins rather than direct field observation.

The bird is characterized by a specialized morphology adapted for its niche environment, featuring notably broad, rounded wings and a long, rounded tail. These physical traits, combined with its distinct plumage, were highlighted by naturalists of the Victorian era who sought to categorize the vast biodiversity of the Papuan region. Its design—an evolutionary response to navigating the thick canopy of its habitat—has made it a subject of significant interest for ornithologists and collectors of rare taxidermy alike, though it remains a protected and difficult-to-study specimen in modern conservation efforts.
