Ringed Antpipit

The Ringed Antpipit, or Corythopis torquatus, occupies a unique position in avian taxonomy as a member of the Tyrannidae family that behaves and appears much like an antbird. First described by Johann Christian von Schreber in 1789, the species was historically misunderstood due to its morphological similarities to the Formicariidae family. Its evolutionary history is tied to the dense understory of humid forests across the Amazon and Atlantic basins, where its distinct foraging habits and ground-dwelling nature evolved in isolation from its closest flycatcher relatives.
