Ross's Gull

Ross's Gull (Rhodostethia rosea) was first identified for Western science during the 1823 Arctic expedition led by John Franklin. It was named in honor of the British explorer James Clark Ross, who collected the type specimen while the crew was wintering on the the Melville Peninsula. The species is characterized by its distinct, delicate pink-hued plumage and a wedge-shaped, forked tail, features that have long made it a highly prized observation for arctic ornithologists and birders alike.

The bird breeds primarily in the high Arctic tundra of northeastern Siberia, with smaller, sporadic nesting populations found in northern Canada and Greenland. Its design is an evolutionary adaptation for survival in extreme polar environments, featuring pointed, agile wings that facilitate sustained, efficient flight over ice floes. Historically, the species was considered a rare accidental visitor to lower latitudes, contributing to its near-mythical status among serious bird enthusiasts who endure difficult conditions to track its migration.
