Where it came from

The Kelp Gull, scientifically known as Larus dominicanus, is a species of gull native to coasts and islands across much of the Southern Hemisphere. It is a large, highly adaptable bird that has successfully expanded its range alongside human development, often thriving in coastal cities and ports where it scavenges for food. Because of its broad wings and square-shaped tail, the species is a highly efficient flier, capable of patrolling vast stretches of coastline to locate food sources, ranging from marine invertebrates to refuse.

The species was formally described by German naturalist Martin Lichtenstein in 1823. Its evolution is characterized by a high degree of generalist behavior, which has allowed it to colonize diverse environments, including sub-Antarctic islands and the urban centers of South America and South Africa. Taxonomists recognize several subspecies across its global range, noting that while the bird’s appearance is consistent, its reliance on specific coastal ecosystems has made it a key subject in studies of avian adaptation and ecological resilience.
