Rufescent Screech-Owl

The Rufescent Screech-Owl, scientifically classified as Megascops ingens, is a nocturnal avian species native to the humid montane forests of the northern Andes. Ornithologically categorized within the Strigidae family, the species was first formally described by the naturalist Osbert Salvin in 1897. Its evolution in these high-altitude cloud forests has resulted in specialized physical traits, such as its characteristic rounded wing and tail shapes, which facilitate maneuverability through dense, cluttered understory vegetation during nocturnal hunting.

The taxonomy and physical profile of this owl reflect an evolutionary adaptation to life in the neotropics. Unlike more widely distributed screech-owl species, Megascops ingens remains elusive and primarily occupies a range extending from Venezuela through Colombia to Ecuador and Peru. The design of its plumage, featuring rich, rufescent, or reddish-brown tones, serves as effective camouflage against the bark and moss-covered trees of its habitat, a trait that historically made early field identification and documentation challenging for 19th-century explorers.
